At least 16 people have been killed and 12 others injured in rain-related incidents in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh over the past 24 hours, said local officials on Sunday.
"So far, 16 people have died due to heavy rains and flooding in the state, with the worst affected being Shahjahanpur district where six people have lost their lives," a disaster management official said.
The meteorological department has predicted widespread rainfall for eastern and western parts of the state Monday and Tuesday, according to a report released by Press Trust of India (PTI).
Apart from the disaster relief force, the Indian Air Force has sent a few helicopters from the Gwalior air base to join the rescue work.
It's reported that 14 people, who were stranded in other districts in the state due to the heavy rain, were rescued by helicopters on Sunday.
Uttar Pradesh is not the only Indian state affected by monsoons this year. Over 400 people died in heavy rains in the southern state of Kerala this monsoon season.
