China's 2002 Winter Olympic short track speed skating champion Yang Yang has been nominated by the International Olympic Committee for the position of World Anti-Doping Agency vice president, the IOC said in a statement on Wednesday.
Yang, 43, became China's first Winter Olympic champion at Salt Lake City in 2002, when she took two gold medals and one silver medal in the short track speed skating events, while also winning silver at the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan, and a bronze at the 2006 Games in Turin, Italy. She also won a total of 28 gold medals at the World Championships between 1997 and 2005.
After retiring, she was an IOC member from 2010 until 2018, when she was appointed an IOC Marketing Commission member.
Last week, WADA nominated Poland's Witold Banka as their preferred candidate for the position of president when Craig Reedie steps down at the end of 2019.
The president and vice president will be formally elected by the board at the World Conference on Doping in Sport 2019, which takes place in Katowice, Poland, in November. And each will assume their role for a three-year term from January 1, 2020.
