Jason Van Dyke, a former white Chicago police officer who shot black teenager Laquan McDonald in 2014, was sentenced to only 81 months in prison, a judge announced on Friday.
Van Dyke was convicted in October of second-degree murder and 16 counts of aggravated battery.
The sentence closed one of the most racially fraught and socially significant chapters in Chicago's recent history.
