Huawei's CFO Meng Wanzhou was released on bail on Tuesday. Bruce Fein, a Constitutional lawyer, told CGTN that it's possible that Meng would be eventually exculpated, especially given Trump's words to Reuters that he would “intervene” in the case if it serves American interests.
He added that if extradition goes forward, the political crime exemption may apply. If Canada concludes that the motivation behind the arrest and the extradition request was a political signal to China and that Meng is a pawn for the U.S. to get a better trade relationship with China, then Meng would be exempted from extradition.
“All of those irregularities suggest that there is political motivation behind this,” Fein said, arguing that the allegations of sanction violations are routinely handled with civil fines. “I fully expect that within the 60-day period, for whatever reason, the United States will not go forward,” Fein told CGTN, warning that the White House is now setting a precedent that would put American businessmen travelling to China at risk.
