More than 500 hikers have been evacuated from an Indonesian volcano after being trapped by landslides from a deadly earthquake, an official from the national disaster agency said on Tuesday.
An estimated 560 stranded trekkers were stranded as tons of rock and mud were dislodged on Mount Rinjani in a 6.4-magnitude quake early Sunday, blocking the hiking routes that crisscross the mountain.
The trapped hikers were thought to have included citizens from the United States, France, the Netherlands, Thailand and Germany, as well as other countries, according to search and rescue officials.
The death toll from Sunday's earthquake stood at 16, while hundreds of buildings were destroyed including a health clinic.
