The first Latin American Center of Tsinghua University was established in Santiago, the capital of Chile, on Wednesday, marking a new era for Beijing's iconic research institute and its overseas global strategy.

It's Tsinghua University's first venture onto Latin American soil.

Over the past two years, the prestigious Chinese institute has been going overseas, looking to educate innovative scholars.

For instance, it has already established a Global Innovation Institute in Seattle, and a School of Art and Design in Milan. Now it has opened up the Latin American Center in Santiago.

"We hope the center can help promote technological and cultural exchanges between Tsinghua University and the Latin American country, especially in the field of student exchanges," said Qiu Yong, president of Tsinghua University.

"I think it's an element that boots our relationship, and provides a different perspective, as we are talking about education, about how to face today's global reality," said Eduardo Frei, former president of Chile.

A forum entitled "Chilean Strategy of Innovation and the Chinese Experience of Digital Transformation" was held a day before the opening ceremony.

Scholars say they hope the center can promote more "in-depth communication" between the two countries.
