A historic declaration has been signed between Republic of Korea (ROK) President Moon Jae-in and the leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Un in Panmunjom to end the war on the Korean Peninsula.
Importantly the two leaders have also agreed to achieve the “common goal” of a “nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.” Details of specific measures have not been made public yet.
Wang Chong, a senior fellow from the Chinese think tank Charhar Institute, talking to CGTN said that although there is a whole paragraph on “complete denuclearization” in the announcement, the title “Peace, Prosperity and Unification” shows that the two nations have more important goals at heart.
Furthermore, Wang Chong pointed out that the pledge did not make any specific promises on the abandonment of nuclear weapons and that the “common goal” of realizing denuclearization is carefully worded showing that Kim and Moon are aware the issue involves more than just their own respective countries.
Regarding the promotion of the unification of separated families in the announcement, Wang Chong also added that dialogue between high-level officials and ordinary people can indeed pave the way for a more unified Korean Peninsula.
