Winter wonderland: Take a rime tour in China

Cui Xingyu

What happens when the water droplets in freezing fog or mist meet the outer surfaces of objects? They form a natural wonder: rime.

There are several enchanting spots to witness winter rime in China. Take a look at the top three in the country.

Jilin Rime Island

Located at the bank of the Songhua River in northeast China's Jilin Province, Jilin Rime Island got its name from its stunning rime scenery in the winter. It is considered one of the four natural wonders in China, attracting large numbers of tourists each year.

Hantun is a small village next to the Rime Island. Thanks to the abundant tourism resources offered by the island, residents were able to open family-run hotels, which has not only brought profits to the families, but also enriched visitors' traveling experiences.

Located in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Hulun Buir is renowned for its vast prairie. When winter comes, Hulun Buir becomes a fairyland of ice and snow. The gleaming snowflakes on the grassland and the towering rime-capped trees bring pure beauty to the land.

Mount Huangshan

Rimes are not exclusive in northern China. Mount Huangshan in east China's Anhui Province is also a good place to appreciate such scenery.

Listed as a World Natural and Cultural Heritage Site, Huangshan is famous for its spectacular natural vistas of pine trees, peculiar peaks, stones, hot springs and views of clouds on the mountain.

Although Huangshan is beautiful all year round, the winter scenery imparts a different charm to the region by creating a crystal palace of silver icy peaks and sparkling frosted trees.

Tips:

1. The best time for visiting is from December to February. It is recommended that you set off early in the morning before the sun rises.

2. The weather is extremely cold, so keep warm. A bottle of hot water or ginger tea also helps.

3. Bring a phone charger or power bank in case your mobile phone runs out of battery quickly at low temperatures.

4. A pair of sunglasses can protect your eyes from the gleaming white snow.
