China's Wang Yafan progressed to the second round of the Australian Open on Monday, breezing her way past the wild-carded local player Ellen Perez on the tournament's opening day.
Although the 24-year-old acknowledged that she initially had trouble adapting to Perez's left-handed style of play, it didn't take long for Wang to adjust, and she closed out the contest 6-4, 6-0.
"She is a left-handed player, which makes it a little frustrating in the rhythm of hitting back," Wang said after the match.
"But when I decided to step back a little, I think I had an advantage when we were exchanging at the baseline."
Concentrating on staying focused and making the most of her strong service game, Wang had a first serve winning percentage of 83 throughout the match.
"I felt good in the first match and I've been in good shape since the Shenzhen Open, so I think this year should be a good one."
