China's Liu Yu Saturday started the third round of the U.S. Open, the second women's major of the season in Charleston, South Carolina, four shots back of the leader.
The 23-year-old from Beijing turned in a fantastic round to head into the final day with a share of the lead as she chases her first major.
The overnight leader, Mamiko Higa of Japan, rolled in a birdie on four to get to seven under but later gave a shot back. But she trailed Celine Boutier of France whose chip on 3 got close and set her up for a birdie.
Liu birdied 11 to get to minus five in her climb to the top, as she finished with a five under 66 to tie for the best round of the day thanks to shots on 12 and will be in the last group on Sunday.
The Beijing native, who was tied with Boutier at seven under with Lexi Thompson, Jaye Marie Green, and Higa one stroke back, has a great chance to become the second Chinese to win a major. Another Chinese, Yan Jing, was at one over par.
