Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe concluded a four-day visit to India on Friday. It's the first visit by a Chinese Defense Minister in six years. Wei met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his counterpart Nirmala Sitharaman.
During a meeting between Wei and Sitharaman on Thursday, the two sides agreed to work toward firming up a new bilateral pact on defense cooperation and they agreed to increase interactions between their militaries at multiple levels to avoid border standoffs like the recent one in Donglang.
High-level exchanges between China and India have frequently taken place this year. Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi three times in three months.

Relations between China and India seem to have eased a lot since last years standoff in Donglang, and they've agreed to deepen military cooperation. Ajay Jha, a senior political analyst, thinks it is a good sign, showing that the two countries are working together.
"India and China, they are the world's two largest military powers. ... So [India and China] working together, coming together, is very important," Jha said, adding that there is a border dispute between China and India, but military action is not the way to solve it. He said military action will cause instability in the two countries, the region, and even the world, and dialogue is the only way to resolve the issue.
Relations between China and India were tense during last year’s standoff in Donglang, which lasted for 71 days. But this year, the relations seem to have eased a lot, as high-level exchanges between China and India have frequently taken place.
Besides the defense minister, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi three times in three months. The two leaders have vowed to work toward closer cooperation.
When talking about cooperation, Mr. Jha said besides military cooperation, there are a lot of fields that the two countries can work together in, such as trade and culture. He emphasized the economic cooperation which will benefit both countries and the people. He said: “If the two countries can work together, they can rule the world.”
