In a major upset at the Crucible, five-time champion Ronnie O'Sullivan suffered a stunning defeat in the second round of the World Championship against Ali Carter. Carter, who had won just once in 17 previous meetings against O’Sullivan, scripted a memorable 13-9 over his fellow Essex rival in an ill-tempered match which saw O'Sullivan appearing to barge into his compatriot's shoulder during the 19th frame.
Earlier, Carter took a 5-3 lead before extending it to 8-3. O'Sullivan clawed his way back into the game for a 9-7 overnight deficit, but couldn’t turn the table as Carter held on to his lead to script a well-deserved win.

This was Carter’s first win over O'Sullivan in a ranking event. He incredibly fought back to revive his career after overcoming lung and testicular cancer, as well as Crohn's disease.
Two-time finalist Carter was defeated in both the 2008 and 2012 finals by O'Sullivan.
