The 12th edition of the World Rope Skipping Championships is currently underway in Shanghai as the Junior World Championships Masters finished on Monday. China’s Zhang Chongyang won the boys overall title to become the fourth master from the Chinese mainland.
In the girls overall standings, Japan's Nene Kiriki came in first place followed by China's Wei Xingqin. Third place went to Anna Kestens of Belgium. China's Xiao Hanxiang skipped 546 times to break the girls 3 minute Endurance world record that was set at 506 by Wei two years ago, but this time she only came 13th.
On the boys' side, Zhang came second in all three events which included the 30 second speed event, 3 minute endurance, and a 75 second individual freestyle show, for a total of 8 points to lead the overall standings. He became the fourth skipper from the Chinese Mainland to win the Masters title.
“I tried to skip as fast as I can, to make sure I can stay in the top three of both the 30 second speed and 3 minute endurance contests. Then I tried my best in individual freestyle to chase the masters title,” Zhang told CGTN Sports Scene.
Meanwhile, in the afternoon’s World Championships Masters for skippers older than 14, Denmark’s Mathilde Helbo Larsen took the women's overall title, followed by Flora Banhegyi from Hungary and Belgium’s Elise Audiens.
In the men’s draw, China's Cen Xiaolin broke his own record in both the 30 second speed and 3 minute endurance contests to win those two events. But he only came in ninth in the overall standings after finishing 17th in individual freestyle.
Speaking to CGTN after the event, Xiaolin said, “I will pay more attention to individual freestyle and will also keep working hard on the two speed events.”
Lau Pan Hei, Ho Chu Ting, and Tommy Hung Lok Hin, all of Hong Kong, were the top three in the men's overall standings.
