Eric Harrison, the Manchester United youth team coach who launched the career of David Beckham, died at the age of 81.
United said Harrison died Wednesday but did not provide a cause of death. He was diagnosed with dementia four years ago.
The Premier League club says "everyone at Manchester United sends their deepest condolences to Eric's family and friends at this sad and difficult time."

Harrison was hired as a youth coach by United in 1981. He retired in 1998 just before his former apprentices won the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup in 1999.
He developed the renowned "Class of 92" at United that alongside Beckham featured winger Ryan Giggs, midfielder Paul Scholes, and the Neville brothers, Phil and Gary, who played in defense.
The graduates of Harrison's youth setup went on to form the backbone of the United team dominating the Premier League for two decades under hugely successful coach Alex Ferguson, who led United from 1986-2013 and remains a club director.
Queen Elizabeth II honored Harrison's contribution to the game last year when she made him a Member of the Order of the British Empire, or MBE.

"Eric's contribution to football and not just at Manchester United was incredible," said former United manager Ferguson. "He built character and determination in those young players and prepared them for the future."
A group of former Manchester United players paid tribute to Harrison in a statement that was posted on Beckham's Instagram account on Thursday.
"More importantly he made us understand how to work hard and respect each other and not just on the pitch. We won't forget the life lessons he gave us."
