Tens of thousands of foreign nationals have traveled to Syria and neighboring Iraq to fight for ISIL. A 2018 survey by the International Center for the Study of Radicalisation showed that over 40,000 people from 80 countries were affiliated with ISIL, including more than 4,000 children. Nearly 19,000 foreign fighters - or 45% - came from the Middle East. Others made their way mainly from East and West Europe, as well as Central and Southeast Asia.
