Argentine football legend Diego Maradona shared stories about his humble beginnings in a new episode of his World Cup program “By the Hand of the Ten.”
Maradona recalled renting a house when he joined Argentina’s national team, and even being shortlisted.
After joining, Maradona said that after he got his bearings, he was ready to play for the national team in 1978. The team's head coach Menotti offered to buy a house for Maradona’s mother that year, which meant that he and his family would leave the slums of his youth. Argentina won the World Cup that same year.
“But I was happy even when we used to play on the street. And I remembered my mom doing hard work as she woke up at 4 a.m., and went back home at 4 p.m. Even though I am not well-educated, my parents still gave me full of love.”
