Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday met with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who were in Beijing for a new round of China-U.S. high-level economic and trade consultations, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
China-U.S. relations are one of the most important bilateral ties in today's world. President Xi pointed out that the two countries shoulder important responsibilities in promoting world peace and prosperity.
Last December, Xi and his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump held a "very successful" meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Buenos Aires, thus Xi hopes the two sides can expand cooperation based on reciprocity and mutual benefit and manage differences based on mutual respect so as to jointly advance Sino-U.S. relations with coordination, cooperation, and stability.
Cooperation is the best option for the two countries, Xi stressed.
Xi also called on both China and the United States to handle the development of bilateral relations from an overall perspective and push for stable development, delivering more and better benefits to the two nations and people around the world.
As the representatives from both sides will meet in Washington next week, Xi hoped the two sides would step up negotiations and reach a concrete agreement that would result in win-win results.
Lighthizer and Mnuchin echoed Xi's view that sound bilateral ties are in line with the fundamental interests of the two peoples and the broad-based expectations of the international community.
During consultations over the past two days, the two sides had in-depth discussions on economic and trade issues of common concern, the U.S. trade officials said.
The U.S. side, they added, is willing to increase cooperation with China through consultations and actively seek mutually beneficial solutions in the next phase.
President Trump is looking forward to maintaining close communication and cooperation with President Xi, the two officials added.
