China produced 1,082 films in 2018, a 20-percent annual increase, the State Film Administration announced Thursday at a meeting about the development of the industry.

Wang Xiaohui, head of the administration, promised to further promote the country's film industry by taking measures such as creating leading businesses and cultivating talent.

All these steps are aimed at achieving quality development of the film industry, helping Chinese films go global, he noted.

The official also pointed out that the industry is facing problems, such as extensive administrative forms and market standards, gaps between the productions and the expectations of the audience, and a dearth in talent.

He urged filmmakers to attach more importance to the quality of their productions and called for better industry regulations.

China's film box office rose nine percent in 2018 to about 61 billion yuan (9.1 billion U.S. dollars), of which domestic films accounted for 62.2 percent, data from the administration showed.
