If you don’t know what ACG is, you’re probably not a part of the latest generation of young Chinese people.
In Japan, it’s called “nijigen,” while in China, it’s called ACG, an abbreviation of animation, comic, games and novels.
ACG fans refer to those who are not interested in interaction with real people, but instead love fictional characters. And they’re willing to pay hundreds or even thousands of yuan to buy an action figure from their favorite ACGs.
One of the distinct characteristics of Chinese ACG fans is that they love ACG music, composed in ancient Chinese music styles and played with traditional musical instruments.
They’re also eager to dress up as fictional characters to be more immersed in the fantasy world. Comicons are a source of inspiration to cosplay and socialize with other fans.
The extreme fanaticism has led to the emergence of a new business to serve the needs of ACG fans.
Yuzuo Culture Development Company, for example, began to produce original “ball joint dolls” (BDG) in 2009 and has established its own brand. They’ve since developed hundreds of figures with their own aesthetics, which have sold well.
