Venezuela's Maracaibo Basin, home to some of the country's wealth of oil reserves, has fallen into a state of disrepair and pollution. Many of the lake's hundreds of oil wells sit disused in the middle of the water, with leaks being allowed to seep out and leave a slick on the surface. At the shores of the lake, beaches and trees are jet black. The water contamination affected the local fishermen's livelihoods who now struggle to survive from the few stocks left in the lake.
