Chinese President Xi Jinping has lauded the role of the media in promoting the relationship between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
He made the remarks in a congratulatory letter sent on Wednesday to the opening ceremony of the 2019 China-ASEAN Year of Media Exchanges in Beijing.
In the letter, President Xi pointed out that China and ASEAN countries share the same mountains and rivers and cultural affinity, and enjoy a long-standing friendship.
In recent years, both sides have increased strategic communication, worked together on the Belt and Road Initiative and handled disputes properly, Xi noted, adding that the China-ASEAN ties have entered a new stage of development on all fronts.
He stressed that holding China-ASEAN Year of Media Exchanges is an important measure to further develop the strategic partnership between the two.
Like a bridge that connects communication and cooperation, as well as people from both sides, the media could play a bigger role in the China-ASEAN relationship, Xi said.
In the letter, the Chinese president also expressed his expectation for the media to promote friendly exchanges, pragmatic cooperation and harmony between China and ASEAN, and tell stories about the two working together for peace and development in order to make a greater contribution to forging a closer China-ASEAN community of shared future.
