Former world number one Maria Sharapova's quest for redemption with a title win at Roland Garros was shattered when she was ousted by Garbine Muguruza on Wednesday. The Spanish third seed inched closer to her second French Open title with an emphatic 6-2, 6-1 victory over the two-time former champion in the French Open's quarter-finals on June 6.
Muguruza, who has yet to drop a set this year at Roland Garros, made a blazing start as she rushed to a 4-0 lead with Sharapova struggling with her serve. The lackluster Russian double-faulted three times in the opening game of the match.
Although she subsequently managed to post a couple of games on the board in the first set, Muguruza bulldozed her way through the second, allowing 28th-seeded Sharapova just one game.
The lop-sided encounter of 70 minutes marked Muguruza's first victory in four meetings over the former-world number one, who was suspended for 15 months in 2015 after testing positive for Meldonium, a limited-market pharmaceutical developed in 1970.

In the post-match press conference, Sharapova lauded her opponent's attacking style, saying, "Well, I think she did a lot of things better than I did. I think she was the aggressive one. She had a lot more depth in the ball. I think my shots were a lot more forced. She served a lot better than I did." On her own performance, the Russian mentioned, "Yeah, I guess, you know, on paper it's a step in the right direction. I think not just – it's tough to just assess a single tournament. I think I have to put a lot of things in perspective for the last, what, four, five weeks since the clay season."
"Coming into this part of the year, I was losing a few first-round matches, matches that I wanted to be winning, of course. But to have had the victories that I have had, to have the results that I have, obviously moving a step in the right direction. But today was certainly not one of those steps."
Meanwhile, Muguruza told the media, "Well, last time we played was a very long time ago, and a lot of things happened in between that. So I felt like I was a more developed player. And, you know, very motivated out there too."
The Spaniard will face top seed Simona Halep in the semi-finals.

Nadal huffs and puffs against Schwartzman

Meanwhile, world number one Rafael Nadal conceded his first set at Roland Garros in his quarter-final match against Diego Schwartzman, but made a quick recovery to lead the second set 5-3 before intervening rain-postponed play to Thursday.
The top-seeded Spaniard is eyeing a record 11th French Open title and suffered a scare when he lost his first set at Roland Garros in three years, as his Argentine opponent took the opening set 6-4 before a one-hour rain delay halted the match.
However, Nadal clawed his way back into the game and clinched the lead when play was suspended for the final time on the day.
