The iconic scene on the back of the fourth edition of the five-yuan Renminbi banknote is the Wuxia Gorge on the Yangtze River.

The Wuxia Gorge is part of the Yangtze's famous Three Gorges, with the Qutang and Xiling as the other gorges.

Stretching for 46 kilometers, the Wuxia Gorge is famous for its deep valleys and towering mountains.

Known in Mandarin as Daxia, it is recognized as the most beautiful of the Three Gorges on the Yangtze River.

The Wuxia Gorge starts from the Daning River in Wushan County of southwestern Chongqing Punicipality and ends at Badong County in central Hubei Province.

Twelve Peaks of Mt. Wushan

As the starting point of the Wuxia Gorge, Mount Wushan features peaks with different shapes, with the most prominent ones being the Twelve Peaks.

The Twelve Peaks are usually blanketed with mist, evoking a sense of mystery for hikers. Another way of appreciating these summits is through a river cruise.

Qiufeng Pavilion

Qiufeng Pavilion, known as the Autumn Wind Pavilion, is also a must-see spot on the Wuxia Gorge. Built by Kou Zhun, a renowned official in the North Song Dynasty (960-1127), Qiufeng Pavilion enjoys a history for more than 1,000 years. Standing at the pavilion, the panoramic views of the Yangtze River are a refreshing reminder of the mesmerizing work of Mother Nature.

Ancient poets have frequently quoted this pavilion when they extolled the beauty of the landscape.

Transportation

Visitors can take the Yangtze River cruise ship at Chongqing Municipality's Chaotianmen Dock to visit the Three Gorges. They can also take a cruise ship at the Wushan County Yangtze River ferry berth to visit the Wuxia Gorge.
