US President Donald Trump has defended US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and has pledged to select a "great" Supreme Court nominee to fill the vacancy of retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.
In respect of ICE, Trump was responding to calls from some Democrats to abolish the agency charged with detaining and deporting unauthorized immigrants.
"We respect ICE. You know, ICE is the one, these are tough people. And you have to be tough," he said Tuesday at a "Salute to Service" dinner in West Virginia.
Trump said that he "hit a home run" with Justice Neil Gorsuch, whom he picked for the nation's highest court last year.
The president spoke to three potential Supreme Court nominees on Tuesday before departing the White House.

Trump praised ICE agents as tough people who are sent in to confront "nests of MS-13" gang members.
"It's like you're liberating a town" and that, "Sometimes they have to go in swinging," he said.
Trump was speaking at the Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs at an event honoring active-duty service members and veterans.
The dinner was held in conjunction with a golf tournament previously known as the PGA Tour's Greenbrier Classic.
