China and Germany maintained closer relations this year. During German Chancellor Angela Merkel's visit to China in May, the two sides agreed to deepen their trade relations and work together on new technology, including self-driving cars. Two months later, in July, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Merkel co-chaired the fifth round of intergovernmental consultations in Germany, where the two countries signed deals worth 20 billion euros.
