Liu Fucao lives on the south bank of the Yangtze River in southwest China and works on the other side of the river. The linear distance between home and work is just about 1,000 meters, but that will take Liu nearly an hour. But since last July, he has used a stand-up paddleboard to cross the river to save time. Paddleboarding is an offshoot of surfing that originated in Hawaii, and a fast-growing sport and hobby for skilled practitioners. It should not be undertaken without training.
