Chinese President Xi Jinping said that China does not have private interests, nor will it seek "spheres of influence", in the Pacific Islands. He made the remarks when meeting with Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister Peter O'Neill in Beijing on Thursday. O'Neill said the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) proposed by Xi is an important contribution to the international community, adding that the BRI has brought development opportunities to the Pacific Islands.
