Maicao, a desert city near the Columbian border, is just one of the places experiencing such social and economic strain. Reportedly, it has seen an almost 30-percent increase in population after tens of thousands of Venezuelan refugees flooded in, many of whom live on the streets. /VCG Photo

In efforts to help the migrants and ease the public burden, a camp was set up by the local and national governments as well as the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). /VCG Photo

With a total of 60 family-sized tents, the shelter is able to house as many as 350 people. It aims to provide the migrants with basic necessities including shelter, food, water, as well as medical care and legal advice. But it is still far from enough, as there is a long waitlist. /VCG Photo

According to the UNHCR, over three million Venezuelan refugees and migrants have left the country. The number is expected to increase, and may reach as many as 5.3 million by the end of 2019. Besides Colombia, the most affected Latin American countries include Chile, Ecuador, Argentina and Brazil. /VCG Photo
