A mobile case invented by a German university student could extend the life of your cell phone.

The fragile screen on smartphones could be very costly for users. For example, repairing a cracked iPhone screen can cost up to 418 US dollars outside of warranty, which is expensive enough to make users consider whether they should buy a new phone.

Created by Philip Frenzel, the case is equipped with a sensor which can detect whether the phone is in free-fall. Once the crisis is confirmed, the case will release four springs which lets the phone bounce when it touches the ground, saving it from cracking.

The “phone-saving” invention raised heated discussion on China’s dominant social media platform Weibo. While the majority praised it and expressed their desire to purchase the case, some netizens were concerned about the safety aspects.

“I like to play with my phone while lying, what if I dropped it on my face?” a Weibo user commented.

“It could be an eye-blinder,” another added.

Frenzel has already won an award from the German Mechatronics Society for his phone case, and has acquired a patent for his phone protector.

According to German publication Preview Online, Frenzel is expected to launch the case on Kickstarter this month with another student from the university.
