China was allocated a spot among the top seeds of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019, said a FIBA media statement posted on Tuesday.
In the statement by FIBA Media twitter account, the association "has reviewed the seeding of Host in the draws of upcoming World Cups" and the FIBA Executive Committee has determined it will "allocate the Host to a spot among the top seeds" following "the benchmark study of Olympic team sports".
The principle will apply to all three World Cups which FIBA is organizing this year, including the FIBA World Cup in China in September.
The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Draw takes place on March 16 in Shenzhen, China. Former NBA and USA national team basketball player Kobe Bryant, a FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 global ambassador, will carry out the Draw.
The 32 teams in the 2019 Basketball World Cup will be drawn into eight groups of four teams each.
The first section is the group stage. The top two teams in each group will advance to the top 16, and the last two teams will play 17 to 32 qualifying.
The 16 teams that advance to the second stage will be re-divided into four groups of four. The top two teams of each group in this stage can advance to the top eight, then comes the quarterfinals, semi-finals, and finals.
As the host country, China is automatically a seeded team. The most direct impact is the Chinese male basketball team will avoid powerful counterparts such as the United States and Spain in the group stage, significantly increasing the chance of reaching the second round.
In addition, the top ranking teams from each continent will qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
