China is willing to continue to play a constructive role on the Korean Peninsula issue, Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi told U.S. State Secretary Mike Pompeo on Friday.
Yang made the remarks when he held a phone conversation with Pompeo at the invitation of the U.S. side.
In the phone talks, Pompeo has informed Yang about the summit of U.S. President Donald Trump and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) leader Kim Jong Un in Hanoi.
Pompeo said that the U.S. will keep contact with the DPRK and continue to work on the Korean Peninsula issue through dialogues.
The U.S. highly appreciated China's positive role and is willing to keep communication and coordination with the Chinese side, said Pompeo.
The Korean Peninsula issue is complicated and difficult to solve overnight, Yang told Pompeo.
Yang expressed the hope that both the U.S. and the DPRK would keep patience, meet each other halfway and continue to advance the peace talks and strive for further progress.
