Virtual Reality, abbreviated as VR, is a computer-generated scenario which can simulate experience. The technology has been most commonly used in entertainment applications, like gaming and 3D cinema. However, China is willing to introduce the cutting-edged tech in to its hospitals to help ease patients’ nerves in operations.
Patients have had a VR experience in Hangzhou City, east China’s Zhejiang Province during surgeries in Zhejiang Provincial People’s Hospital.

The hospital ushered in the VR wearable on Monday and around six patients have worn the device since then when there were undergoing the surgery for varicose veins. Patients can learn some disease information and preventions thorough the VR device.
Jiang Jingsong, director of the hospital’s vascular, surgery responded to the application of the VR technology to operations, saying “Patients’ feedback is positive,” and added that VR both helped patients and doctors.
“The varicose veins surgery is a common operation, but patients are often under local anesthetic. They are vulnerable to slip into nervous tension and sometimes doctors would have to talk with them to ease their tension. The introduction of VR can distract patients from surgeries and help doctors concentrate on a surgery itself,” Jiang told to The Paper, a Shanghai-based news outlet.

The creative idea of bringing VR in hospitals is said to be inspired by a young patient who was wearing a pair of VR glasses for fun when he was hospitalized and seen by doctors. After rounds of discussions, the hospital decided to commission some professional animation producers to visualize disease information, surgery steps, and postoperative care. In the future, the VR playlist may offer more personalized choices.

VR has been widely used in China over the past few years, which could be seen as a booster to turn China into the largest VR market by 2021. Earlier this year, a court in Beijing helped bring a witness back to the crime scene with the aid of VR.
Xinhua cited professionals in the industry saying that China’s VR market is expected to hit 10 billion yuan by the end of 2018 and around 79 billion yuan by 2021.
