A giant trash collection device left San Francisco Saturday on its way to pick up plastic litter floating in the Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii. It is expected to trap some of the 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic that scientists estimate are swirling in that gyre – but will allow marine life to swim beneath it safely.
