The Boston Red Sox that won the championship of MLB's 2018 World Series are reconsidering visiting the White House, a tradition for champion teams of the four major sport leagues in North America (NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB) because of the ongoing government shutdown.
"It's tough with the government shutdown. It's something we'll be watching," said John Henry, owner of the Red Sox to NBC Sports Boston's Evan Drellich. Tom Werner, co-owner and chairman of the team said that although they intended to go, "it's awkward if there's a shutdown".

Alex Cora, manager of the Red Sox was reconsidering, too and he had other concerns than simply the government shutdown, which related to President Donald Trump's treatment of Puerto Rico, where Cora hails from. "…like I said, if I go, I'll represent Puerto Rico the right way. I don't know what kind of platform I'm going to have if I go. It's not that I've changed my mind. But we'll see what happens in the upcoming days," said Cora via MassLive's Christopher Smith.
The team previously agreed to visit the White House on February 15 during their spring training camp. However, the team did not request that all players have to go. Actually some did not want to go in the first place. "I don't want to name any names. But we've had lots of players that want to go and a few players who have communicated they don't want to go," said the team's president Sam Kennedy.
Third baseman Rafael Devers said that he's not visiting the White House but he's not taking a political side either. Eduardo Nunez has not decided whether to go or not but did not mention his concerns. Chris Mason, Red Sox writer for the Eagle Tribune wrote on Twitter that "a few" players already told the team that they're skipping the visit.
