China is now the world's largest meat producer, and also the second-largest beef importer. The country consumed nearly 70 million tonnes of beef last year, worth about 3.3 billion US dollars. The imports are mostly from a handful of countries, with Australia leading the way last year. Since 2014, China has continued to expand its list of importers, which now includes many countries in the European Union.
