Off to golf's final major of the season -- the PGA Championship. Kevin Kisner, had a share of the lead after the opening round, and looked to be the man to catch going into the weekend. But Hideki Matsuyama, the winner of last week's WGC event would get hot -- and match the American -- as the Japanese golfer looks to win his sixth event in the last year and a half, and tries to become the first man from his country to win a major.
The weather also a factor in the round, as those clouds would bring rain affecting the session. The wet stuff not to blame for this errant tee shot by Rory Mcllroy, as he ends up on the cart path on 10, but the Northern Irishman is able to get it back near the green. He is 10 off the pace. Jordan Spieth going for the career grand slam, has issues as well, also finding trouble on 10 -- his shot would end up nowhere near the fairway -- and spectators flock to the ball's landing spot, to help him locate it. He is 11 back of the leader.
Kisner, would fire his second straight round of 4-under 67, getting this putt from off the green on 7, and he has the clubhouse lead at 8-under after his morning session. But plenty of golfers still have their rounds to play, and several make moves -- including Jason Day -- the former winner is able to get this long birdie putt to fall on 13 -- and he closes to within a couple shots of the lead.
Louis Oosthuizen, a former major winner also finds himself in the hunt -- this is his tee shot on number four -- and that is close, setting himself up for a bird. The South African in a tie for fourth. Sharing that spot is Francesco Molinari, who would have the round of the day -- a 7-under 64, thanks to chips like this on number seven. The Italian is 3 off the pace.
Also matching that 7-under score is Matsuyama -- the Japanese golfer going on a run over the last half of his round -- this is his approach on 17, which gets him close. He rattles off five birdies in a six-hole stretch to get to minus 8 -- and has a share of the lead going into the weekend.
So the pair, are a couple strokes in front of Day, then it's a logjam in fourth. Rickie Fowler among those at minus three. China's Li Haotong is at plus three, and just made the cut. Defending champ Jimmy Walker did not.
