As the largest and most populous continent on earth, Asia has 47 countries, covering 30 percent of the total land area, and its 4.5 billion people constitute roughly 60 percent of the world's population.
Given its size and diversity, the concept of Asia actually has more to do with human geography than physical one. It varies greatly across and within its regions with regard to ethnic groups, cultures and environments, ranging from the equatorial south via the hot desert in the Middle East, temperate areas in the east and the continental center to vast subarctic and polar areas in Siberia.
