The London Marathon is set for this weekend, but Mo Farah's preparations have been disrupted. The four-time Olympic gold medalist and six-time world champion claims to have been robbed while training in Ethiopia last month, at a hotel owned by distance running legend Haile Gebrselassie.
Farah finished third in London and won top honors in Chicago last year, and said he went to Ethiopia in an effort to improve his conditioning ahead of Sunday's race.
He claimed the theft occurred on March 23rd, which was also his 36th birthday. Farah's accusation has touched off a series of charges and counter-charges through the media with the 46-year-old Gebrselassie, a two-time Olympic and four-time world champion.
"Training has gone all well and everything else, but there was just slightly at bit of a problem with my hotel I stayed in, in Ethiopia, where someone at the hotel had gone into my bag, opened my bag, took my money, took my nice watch my wife bought me as a present,” said Farah in an interview.
“Just to be honest, it's (retired Olympic gold medal distance runner) Haile (Gebrselassie) who owns the hotel and when you stay for three months in that hotel, it was very disappointing to know that someone who has that hotel and that kind of support couldn't do nothing. And at the end I was just like 'they couldn't do nothing.' So I was just disappointed with Haile,” Farah added.
