After receiving prosthetic legs at a rehabilitation clinic in the Turkish city of Istanbul, Maya Meri, an 8-year-old Syrian refugee, came back home with her father Muhammed Ali Meri on Saturday. /VCG Photo
Before receiving her life-changing prosthetic legs paid for by a Turkish aid group in June, the girl struggled to walk with contraptions made from tuna cans, plastic tubes and fabric attached by her father, who shared the same disability, a condition called congenital amputation – birth without a limb or limbs. /VCG Photo
The girl attracted wide attention when she was filmed in a camp walking around on the contraptions in Syria. Maya and her father crawled on the ground to get around. /VCG Photo
"I thought of doing something that would protect her while on the ground from stones and other things. So I made these limbs for her," said Muhammed. "I am so grateful to everyone involved in this treatment." /VCG Photo
After the successful treatment, father and daughter returned to the Ser Ceble refugee camp in Syria, accompanied by a delegation from Turkish Red Crescent. /VCG Photo
