The World Cup is not only about squad scores and players' performance, it's also about bagging a lucrative reward.
FIFA stated in October 2017 that a total of 400 million US dollars would be shared between competitors at the Russia World Cup in the form of a prize fund. This is in contrast to the 358 million US dollars offered in 2014. The champion of the tournament will receive 38 million US dollars while the runner-up will get 28 million US dollars. Amid the 32 participating national federations, each will get at least eight million US dollars, the same as in 2014.
The prize pool never relies on FIFA alone, as different national federations offer various sums of prize money.

For Brazil, if the national squad go all the way in Russia, they will receive nearly one million US dollars each, set aside by the Brazil Football Association (CBF), according to the Brazilian outlet Folha de Sau Paulo.

The federation in Spain promised its 23-man squad 800,000 euros (932,000 US dollars) each if they win the tournament, outlet La Liga reports.

Players from the defending champion Germany will receive 350,000 euros (410,000 US dollars) each if they can continue their victory in Russia. Each player can also earn 75,000 euros (87,425 US dollars) in the quarter-final and 125,000 euros (145,000 US dollars) in the semi-final. If they lose in the final, every individual can still earn a bonus of 200,000 euros (233,100 US dollars) while the team will not get financially boosted for group stage victories or for the round of 16, according to The Mirror.
