China’s game market is booming. A new report said that the market collected about 105 billion yuan (about 15 billion US dollars) in revenues in the first half of 2018, which was a 5.2 percent increase.
The semi-annual game industry report from data company JoyNews Corporation and the China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association also noted that the old-fashioned game market has already become saturated.
That explained why companies are spending more on developing new technologies and market segments, such as E-sports and games that target female players. According to the report, E-sports revenues jumped about 16 percent in the first half of the year to top 41 billion yuan (about six billion US dollars).
“For any game developers, if you want to be competitive, you'd have to improve and upgrade the technology. Then there's innovation. And only with innovation can we offer better designs or more new games to our users,” said Liu Huicheng, president of Ourpalm, one of China's leading web and mobile game developer.
The report also showed that from January to June, China's self-developed online games sold 4.6 billion US dollars in overseas market, a 16 percent boost from a year ago.
“We are targeting the global market starting with R&D. For example, Superpop&Lollipop – one of our company's most popular games, has an internationalized background story, and the characters also have rather exotic looks,” explained Li Shuang, art director of Giant Network.
