European and Japanese space agencies successfully launched an Ariane 5 rocket on a mission to Mercury on October 20 in Kourou, on the Atlantic coast of French Guiana. The journey is expected to last seven years. Mercury is the closest planet to the sun. The probes are designed to cope with temperatures varying from 430 degrees Celsius on the side facing the sun to -180 degrees Celsius in Mercury's shadow.
