As Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in Manila for a state visit, China's ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua said his visit will further promote all-round cooperation between the two countries, especially in the field of infrastructure.

Xi's two-day trip in the country is also the first state visit by a Chinese head of state to the Southeast Asian nation in 13 years. 

The ambassador also expected that momentum of cooperation to grow. 

"The two sides are discussing and identifying a series of infrastructure cooperation projects. I believe that through this state visit, China and the Philippines will officially become partners of the Belt and Road Initiative following the principle of wide consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits."

With its beautiful natural landscape, the Philippines has attracted many Chinese tourists. Last year, China became the second largest source of tourists to the Philippines.

The ambassador also expected that the two countries will promote personnel and people-to-people exchanges in all areas. 

"The number of Chinese tourists to the Philippines has exceeded one million per year, and we expect it to surpass 1.5 million this year," Zhao said, adding that exchanges between the two countries in various fields, including economy, technology and education are also getting active. 

"Most importantly, the cooperation and exchanges between our local governments have been advancing by leaps and bounds."

"Now, there are over 300 flights between the two countries each week, which shows the rapidly growing momentum and the huge potential of people-to-people exchanges," Zhao added.
