Jose Gimenez, center-back of Uruguay cried during the match against France at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium on Saturday when there were five minutes left before the end. His tears did not retrieve a defeat for his country that got eliminated after a 0-2 loss.
According to staff from La Liga’s Atletico de Madrid, the team Gimenez plays for, the 23-year-old young man is indeed an emotional player who cries to reveal true sentiments. Back in 2014 when Uruguay was knocked out by Columbia at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Gimenez shed his tears.
However, Gary Neville, former star football player of England did not like the action and criticized Gimenez when he was working as the commentator for the match for ITV. “Is he crying? What's he crying for? What's up with him? There's five minutes to go yet. I'm all for emotion and passion, but that's embarrassing. Your team has got five minutes, you can score two goals - get on with it!” said Neville.

Neville’s reaction has caused controversy among both the media and football fans. UK’s Daily Mail called him “ruthless” in the headline about the commentary. Sport Bible posted an article with the headline “What Gary Neville Said About Jose Gimenez Crying Is Brutal”.
Many fans did not like what Neville said either. Kiyan Sobhani tweeted “It's not embarrassing. It's a real feeling. Your statement is embarrassing, Gary.” OluOt said “Imagine Neville calling Gimenez embarrassing for crying. They are 2 goals down and about to go out. Football is a religion in South America, not just a sport.” “Really annoyed me when the commentator called Gimenez 'embarrassing' for crying. As if men can’t show their emotions anymore”, wrote anyaSini.
