A major car pile-up involving 31 vehicles killed at least 11 near a highway toll station in Lanzhou, northwest China's Gansu Province, according to local police.

Thirty-one others were injured, 11 of them seriously, in the crash.

A truck reportedly lost control and led to the incident, which took place at 7:20 p.m. local time.

Rescue efforts are underway.
