The defending champions of an Honor of Kings tournament succeeded in their bid to retain their title at this year's e-sport event in Beijing.
The five-member Team QGhappy on Saturday night was crowned the 2018 champions of the Honor of Kings International Invitation Tournament after a grueling best-of-7 affair against the 2016 champions eStarPro, which ended 4-2.
"Honor of Kings" was first launched as a mobile strategy game by Chinese tech behemoth Tencent in 2015. The sweeping popularity of the game, with around 200 million players monthly, has led to the creation of an e-sport championship, where the game is played on computers.
This year marks the first time international teams are allowed to join. The tournament is a centerpiece of the King Pro League, the highest professional level of the e-sport game established in 2016.
Twenty-year-old gamer Chen Zhengzheng, playing under the name of QGhappy Cat as the game character Da Qiao, became the only contestant to win the game-related championship four times. His teammate Peng Yunfei, 18, was the solo fourth FMVP (Finals Most Valuable Player) in the game, playing as Zhang Fei under the handle QGhappy Fly.
The tournament kicked off on August 1 with 16 teams competing for money prizes ranging from 25,000 US dollars to 400,000 US dollars. Teams from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Macao Special Administrative Region, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia and the US took part in the game.
