At least 49 dead as boat sinks in northwest DRC

At least 49 people died after a boat sank on Wednesday night in the Congo River in the northwestern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Governor of Tshuapa province Mboyo Iluka said on Thursday.

The cause of the incident was not immediately clear.

Iluka said the vessel had left the village of Monkoto for Mbandaka, and sank in the province of Tshuapa.
