Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday called for joint efforts to promote mutual understanding and mutual trust between people across the Taiwan Strait in order to enhance the recognition of peaceful reunification.
Xi said it is important to promote "spiritual reunion" and recognition of peaceful reunification of people on both sides.
He said people from both sides of the Strait share the same roots and culture, and there's no knot that cannot be untied. Through time and effort, Xi added, people on both sides can surely bring about more common understanding.
He made the remarks at a meeting in Beijing marking the 40th anniversary of the mainland's "Message to Compatriots in Taiwan". Issued by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress on January 1, 1979, the "Message" first proposed ending the military confrontation across the Strait through dialogue and welcomed exchanges between the two sides.
Speaking to Taiwan compatriots, he said the mainland sincerely hopes they can cherish peace like cherishing their own eyes, pursue reunification like pursuing their own happiness, and vigorously push for peaceful reunification.
