A herdsman found a great bustard while pasturing his sheep in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
"It was sitting in the haystack. I went over and found the bird. It seemed to be injured in the leg and wasn't able to stand up, so I took it home," said He Bao, a resident of Inner Mongolia's Xilingol League.
Local police took the bird to a vet for treatment.
The great bustard is under first-class state protection in China, and globally ranked as vulnerable by the IUCN.
The species is one of the heaviest birds in the animal kingdom, with males commonly weighing more than 10 kilograms.
