Chinese court sentences Canadian citizen to death for drug smuggling

The Intermediate People's Court of Dalian City in northeast China's Liaoning Province has sentenced Robert Lloyd Schellenberg, a Canadian citizen, to death for drug smuggling; his properties will also be confiscated, according to a statement released by the court.

According to a statement released on the website of the Intermediate People's Court of Dalian City, Schellenberg has been convicted of participating in organized cross-border drug trafficking, in which he smuggled over 222 kilograms of methamphetamine in China in 2014.  
"Schellenberg was the culprit with the completion of the crime," read the statement.

Schellenberg was found guilty by the intermediate court in November and sentenced to 15 years in prison on a drug smuggling charge. 
The court verdict also included a fine of 150,000 yuan (around 21,800 U.S. dollars). 
After the verdict in November, the High People's Court of Liaoning Province ordered a retrial of Schellenberg in December.
